Minnesota Siding, Roofing, & Windows
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIDING for your home can be a daunting, disheartening, and, as you may find, a disingenuous experience. Recent siding product innovations have radically changed the exterior remodeling industry. So what you thought about vinyl siding (for instance) 10 years ago most likely been improved since then.
BELOW you’ll find a resource for comparing the current variety of siding in our Minnesota market.
PROS: Price, ability to make repairs, fade resistance (newer technology) maintenance-free. SOLID-CORE vinyl siding: Incredible panel strength, rigidity, tight seams, up to a 5.3 R-value added to the home. Nearly all of the major manufacturers offer this technology, although there are varying degrees of differences among the panels. Warranties are now offered which cover not just the panel itself, but labor - for life (non pro-rated!); fading up to 3 hunter units of color (virtually imperceptible to your eyes).
CONS: While becoming more brittle with age, cheap vinyl can crack under extreme temperatures. Unsightly seams; but again this is found typically in cheaper, hollow-back siding.
If you get slightly edgy or nervous thinking of your Excel bill, solid core siding (RIGHT) will add up to an R-Value of 4.0 to your exterior walls, saving you $ big time.
FIBER CEMENT / ENGINEERED WOOD SIDING
PROS: Products such as James Hardie siding (aka.Hardie Plank siding, Hardy Board siding), and LP SmartSide (engineered wood) are quickly becoming the most talked about siding product in recent years. Hardie board is a unique mixture of 93% wood fiber and 6% cement, with the remaining 1% adhesives. It is strong, durable, and attempts to duplicate the look and feel of wood (successfully). Lp SmartSide attempts to "improve on nature" and that it does. With zinc borate in the substrate of the panel, you are virtually assured of eliminating the risk of water damage.
CONS: Theses products are NOT maintenance-free and will need to be painted throughout its (your) lifetime.
Specifically, in regards to James Hardie, exposing this siding product to water may cause de-lamination to unpainted boards (last I checked, the warranty was null and void if not painted within 6 months of install). If you don’t believe this claim, simple leave a piece out in the rain for a day or so and watch what happens. Another alarming negative (for the installers) is the silica dust which is produced when Hardie Plank is cut. SEE: James Hardie Siding for official cautions.
JAMES HARDIE SIDING must be installed correctly in order to maintain its warranty. Call NORTHERN EXTERIORS MINNESOTA today to schedule a:
FREE “No-Pressure” ESTIMATE from a qualified, licensed, insured, experienced, local siding contractor.
PROS: Strength, durability, protection.
CONS: Noisy; difficult to repair; conducts both heat and cold, permanently dents. Seamless steel siding can expand and contract to such a large degree depending the size of the run, that some claim to hear the expansion and contraction of the siding.
No matter the siding product you choose, ask a Northern Exteriors Minnesota home improvement professional to inform your decision.
